Regents Park, Hanover Bridge garden redesign.

Winner of the 2024 Capel Manor redesign award by Royal Parks

This award-winning project was created to transform a previously neglected, fragmented site into a peaceful retreat where visitors can sit and enjoy serene lake views.

Inspired by the lake’s reed banks and the site’s contrasting features—a mature oak on one side, bamboo on the other—the planting design weaves these elements into a calm, cohesive whole. Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster' grasses echo the lakeside reeds, adding movement, texture, and continuity throughout.

Existing Lonicera hedges were retained, with new Calamagrostis added for balance and flow, while a third hedge near the bamboo offers a visual pause. Hakonechloa macra, reminiscent of miniature bamboo, ties the theme together and thrives across light conditions.

To reflect the oak, oak-leaf hydrangea provides bold foliage and seasonal interest. A restrained palette of complementary plants—such as silver-leafed Brunnera and Stachys—connects shaded and sunny areas. Structural contrasts between vertical grasses, soft groundcovers, and evergreen mounds (Pittosporum, Viburnum, Mahonia) bring year-round appeal.

The result is a unified, tranquil space that encourages stillness and reconnection with the natural surroundings.
